Is KRS-“One” dimensional?…No, Here’s Why
Lawrence “Kris” Parker, better known by his stage names KRS-One, and Teacha, is an American rapper and producer from The Bronx, New York.
KRS-One rose to prominence as part of the group Boogie Down Productions, which he formed with DJ Scott La Rock in the mid 1980s. Following the release of the group’s debut album, Criminal Minded, La Rock was shot dead, but KRS-One continued the group, effectively as a solo project. He began releasing records under his own name in 1993, one of which was his most well known track to date “Sound of da Police.”
However what I didn’t realise about him was that he is also an active speaker on a range of profound subjects. KRS-One is politically active, having started the Stop the Violence Movement, after the death of Scott La Rock.
I recently stumbled upon a video of his on Facebook where he is teaching some young students about questioning who they “REALLY” are.
I thought he not only had some very interesting points to discuss but was also able to deliver his message in a very convincing way, which only goes to strengthen his final point which stated: “And when the real being speaks, all nature and the universe responds.”
And before you say it, yes he is advertising a certain brand of drink. In fact I think this is a good example of when a clear message can get clouded by capitalism and the need to sell a product. You can read into this further in my previous blog “Taking A Leap.” However, I still think his message is relevant and you just have to look past the obvious.
Sometimes we are too caught up in our daily lives and society forces us to think and behave in a certain way. But when you really break things down to this level, all that “stuff” kind of becomes irrelevant.
Being a father myself, I hope that one day we could see people like KRS-One initiating deeper discussions in the mainstream of our schools.
